Just enjoy the Learning

Life is wonderful as it allows us to learn almost any thing at any point of time. Most interestingly, sometimes it indicates the need of unlearning first and then learn more appropriately. Everyone should keep questioning and trying to find answers of such questions himself. The life shall surely generate the circumstances facilitating one to find the right answers. Try to avoid drawing either joy or sorrow from circumstances, but be happy for whatever has been learnt.

Exploring the Potential of Information Technology in Post COVID-19 Era

The Keynote Address in
National Webinar on "Future Opportunities in IT" with reference to Covid-19
Dept. of Computer Science, Govt. Holkar [Model, Autonomous] Science College and ISROSET, Indore (MP), India, 15th June 2020

The COVID-19 has already killed SEVERAL thousand innocent people; Several million people are still struggling in the quarantine centers to recover; Several billion people are afraid of it and they are trying hard to remain protected; Many industries have been closed; many people have become unemployed; many nations have been succumbed. Everyone knows that COVID-19 is a formal name assigned to the Chinese Virus, and hence, the entire world is gearing up to give a befitting multidimensional reply to the culprits. We all will surely become a part of it, either knowingly or unknowingly, either in supervised manner or in unsupervised manner. Ultimately, in next couple of years the world is going to be restructured and it will have new ways of life.

Respected Dattatraya Hosabole ji has suggested a forward looking approach by stating that,
One thing is certain; the world is not going to be the same in the post CORONA Era. And the human kind has to revisit its life style and other things. The entire humanity will have to again reexamine what they have been doing all these years, how they have been living? Whether these things are going to be sustainable one? Already the answer is NO. That’s why they will have to accept new ways of life.”

I am sure that Information Technology is going to play the central role in this process. We all are those fortunate persons on whom the almighty has entrusted the responsibility of discovering the new ways of life. We should accept this challenge. Let us begin by looking back and try to examine the fundamental mistake committed by us as a society. I strongly feel that giving highest importance to efficiency has been our biggest mistake. While designing every small or big system/process we have done the optimization with respect to the ‘efficiency’ parameter. It is well known that the efficiency improves when the output produced is enhanced for same input or same output can be achieved with reduced input. The Chinese virus took the advantage of this grave mistake. Many times in the past as well our nation has paid huge cost because of this attitude of the people.
So, what correction is needed? My submission is that we must understand that ‘Resilience’ deserves more importance than the efficiency, i.e. the system/process should be designed to exhibit greater ability to quickly recover from difficulties. The attributes like ‘Self Reliance’ (Aatma Nirbhar) and ‘Vocal for Local’ are some of the ways of introducing resilience into the systems, but everyone must understand that it requires a fairly complex ICT based restructuring of existing systems/processes. Only Information Communication Technology (ICT) can bring both resilience as well as efficiency into the systems. Following applications may be the good starting points:
      E-education
The article, “Online classes: Lets Plan not ban” written by Mrs. Rohini Nilkeni was published in Deccanherald on 12th June 2020, wherein the need for finding answers to the following arguments are underlined: Equity, Health, Learning, Monitoring and Assessing, Extra Financial burden on Parents. Addressing these challenges, we need to build customized ICT solutions for Primary, Middle, Higher Class School education (Currently available tools like Diksha, PM E-Vidya, Vidyadaan and Swayam Prabha are good but not enough.), And also for Arts/Commerce/ Science/Technical/ Medical etc. College education (NPTEL, SWAYAM, MOOKs, etc. are good but not enough, we have to have something like CSTCP-IIITA).
      Enabling ‘Work-from-home’ for Non-IT industries
The IT industry has successfully adopted the ‘Work-from-home’ culture, but the challenge is that, how effectively can we extend the similar facilities to non-IT sector? Spying tool?? OR legitimate monitoring tools??
Providing E-Business opportunities to underprivileged people
Plug-n-play type E-business opportunities to street vendors and micro industries.
      E-Health Management
ICT Supported Community Quarantine center, managed by local groups e.g. colony committee

I have just touching the tip of the iceberg. May it trigger new ideas and commitments in your mind.

Thanking you for the patient hearing.
